2 CONT Oscar Roberts, youngest son of Benjamin and Lois Roberts was born in Morgan county, Ohio, Jul
2 CONC y 1, 1836. He came to Iowa with his parents in 1843, and settled in Van Buren county, where J
2 CONC . K. Clark now lives. Here he grew to manhood and October 10, 1861, at the age of twenty-fiv
2 CONC e was united in marriage to Mary Ann Dille of the same county, who had come with her parent
2 CONC s to Iowa, some few years after the Roberts family. For about three years this young couple l
2 CONC ived at the home of the Mt. Zion church, where Carpenter now lives. And this was the home unt
2 CONC il just a few years ago making for a period of forty years, a continuous residence on one far
2 CONC m.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Here their family grew up about them, a family of two girls and six boys, as follows: Mrs. Ca
2 CONC stilla Hoskins, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mrs. Alice Piper, Douglas, Oklahoma; B. F., Bentonsport
2 CONC , Iowa; C. H., Cantril, Iowa, W. L., Altemont, Missouri; M. T., Cantril, Iowa; R. E., Cantril
2 CONC , Iowa; and A. L. of Mt. Sterling, Iowa. They were all able to be present at the funeral.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Eight years ago Brother Roberts moved to Cantril from the farm, and with the exception of a f
2 CONC ew weeks have made their home in the house just south of the school-house. The deceased unite
2 CONC d with the Protestant Methodist church at Mt. Zion appointment near his old homestead northea
2 CONC st of Cantril during the pastorate of Rev. Noble. This was about twenty years ago. Since thi
2 CONC s time he has been faithful to all the interests of his church as far as able and for years h
2 CONC e was an official in the church. Brother Roberts has been in failing health for the past te
2 CONC n years, but was able to be about most of the time, altho at times worse than others. On las
2 CONC t Wednesday at four in the afternoon he took a chill and grew worse rapidly and slipped peace
2 CONC fully away Friday, January 5, at 11:30 p.m. being 75 years, 6 months and 4 days old. He was t
2 CONC he last of the Benjamin and Lois Roberts family of nine children, and was one of Van Buren co
2 CONC unty's highly respected and pioneer families.

2 CONT Mary Ann Roberts, wife of Oscar Roberts, departed this life December 20, 1922, at the home o
2 CONC f her daughter, Mrs. A. R. Hoskin, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

2 CONT Mrs. Roberts was born in Morgan county, Ohio, August 17, 1843, and came with her mother, Mrs
2 CONC . Rebecca Dille, to Iowa in 1848, where she has since continuously resided except occasiona
2 CONC l visits with her children.
2 CONT 
2 CONT On October 10, 1861, she was united in marriage to Oscar Roberts who preceded her in death Ja
2 CONC nurry [sic] 1912. To this union was born eight children, Mrs. Castilla Hoskin, of Cedar Rapid
2 CONC s, Iowa, Mrs. Alice Piper of Douglas, Okla., B. Frank, of Washington state, Charles H. and M.
2 CONC T. of Cantril, Ia., Willis L. of Alttmont [sic], Mo., Roy L., of Bonaparte, Ia., Lester of De
2 CONC s Moines, Ia., all except one son, B. F., of Washington are present today. Besides the eigh
2 CONC t children she leaves to mourn her departure 24 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Mrs. Roberts was a faithful member of the Methodist Protestant church, holding her membershi
2 CONC p in the Mt. Zion church northeast of Cantril. She loved her Bible, believed in its promise
2 CONC s and endeavored to follow its teachings. A loving mother, a kind neighbor, a faithful Christ
2 CONC ian friend. She will be missed by all who knew her, and of her can be truly said, "She has do
2 CONC ne what she could."

2 CONT How blest the righteous when they die,
2 CONT When sinks a weary soul to rest,
2 CONT How mildly beams the closing eyes,
2 CONT How gently heaves the expiring breast,
2 CONT Life's labor done, as sinks the clay,
2 CONT Light from its load the spirit flies,

2 CONT Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church at Cantril Sunday afternoon at 2 o'
2 CONC clock. Interment in the Hoskin cemetery.
