2 CONT Simon and Ellen (Cutter) Irey, with their two daughters, Mabel and Maude, cam
2 CONT to Oklahoma to  Orval Cutter's  place that he had settled in 1889, south of
2 CONT Marshall. The line was just north of Marshall for the opening of the cherokee
2 CONT Outlet. They stayed with Orville, (Ellen's brother) until the opening of the
2 CONT Cherokee Strip in 1893.
2 CONT 
2 CONT The surveyors came in ahead of time and laid off sections and miles, placing
2 CONT corner stones and a "dead man"or big rock buried in the middle of the road of
2 CONT each mile for the surveyors to go by. While they were staying  with Uncle
2 CONT Orville, grandmother had a son born named Harry and a daughter, Lula. Mother
2 CONT (Mabel Irey) was 4 or 5 years old. They came in a covered wagon with things to
2 CONT start a new home in the new country. They had such things as cows, chickens,
2 CONT grain, etc. There wasn't anything here, only Prairie grass, no roads.
2 CONT 
2 CONT This line they were to be along for the race to claim land, was just on the
2 CONT north edge of Marshall to the Kansas Line. People lined up on the North Line
2 CONT and some came from the South Line. They ran the run with horses, or used
2 CONT covered wagons, horse-drawn, to stake their claims. They carried stakes with
2 CONT flags on them to put on the corner and center of the section they claimed
2 CONT before someone else tried to claim it.
2 CONT 
2 CONT At 12:00 Noon, September 16, 1893, when the guns sounded, off they went. An
2 CONT Uncle of ours, Joe Gibson and family, had come to Uncle Orville Cutter's  to
2 CONT make the run also, so he and our grandfather staked claims eight miles straight
2 CONT north of Marshall, Oklahoma in Garfield County. Grandfather rode a white texas
2 CONT pony while Uncle Joe rode a sorrel mule. Grandmother Irey and children followed
2 CONT in a covered wagon. Grandfather had told her he would keep going straight
2 CONT north. There were no roads, fences, bridges, just buffalo wallows and cowboy
2 CONT trails where cattle had been driven from Texas to Dodge City, Kansas, to
2 CONT market. Grass was real tall. That year was so dry that there were a lot of
2 CONT prairie fires and dust so bad they could hardly see where the markers, corners
2 CONT and center of the sections were laid out.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Grandfather put his stake at the corner and then at the center of Section
2 CONT 27-21-4, Garfield County. They had to sleep by the stake to keep others from
2 CONT trying to steel their claim and some people were killed. Uncle Joe got the
2 CONT section south of grandfather. They stayed with the claim until they could go
2 CONT into Enid at the county seat to file their claim to homestead the next day.
2 CONT They would take the wagon and go back up to Kansas to get things along that
2 CONT they needed, such as grain to plant after they got the sod broken. Some lived
2 CONT in dugouts. My Uncle Joe had two dugouts. I don't know if Grandfather used the
2 CONT one or not. He had one on each quarter. I don't know how long it was before
2 CONT grandfather got lumber and built a small home and added to it later on. He also
2 CONT addedlarger rooms, then added the upstairs. By this time, trains were hauling
2 CONT in wood and supplies through Enid sough and over to Perry east. They would make
2 CONT trips with a wagon back to Kansas. They would have to ford the river up by
2 CONT Saltfork, Oklahoma or Tonkawa. Some times water would be high and hard to get
2 CONT across. Aunt Aude said one time grandfather had the wagon box tied to the
2 CONT running board or they would not have made it. The water was up. To keep from
2 CONT turning over when the wagon would sway, they would lean to the opposite side to
2 CONT help keep it straight and keep them afloat, till they could find a place where
2 CONT the horses could climb the banks. These years were hard. They brought hedge
2 CONT apples from Kansas, soaked them in milk, planted them  around fields and
2 CONT pastures to grow to make posts. They were so close they used as a fence. Later
2 CONT they stretvched barb wire fastened to these trees making the second fence. Most
2 CONT of the trees grew over the wire. Now I am second generation, we are cutting out
2 CONT these trees between sections (1980) and making corner posts and fire wood. This
2 CONT makes the third fence since the opening of the Strip. There were very few trees
2 CONT when this land was opened for homes. So these trees had to be planted. Now our
2 CONT state has all kinds of trees; cedar, elm, hackberry, oak, hickory, cottonwood,
2 CONT etc. We cut the hedge for the corner post and buy steel posts and steel barb
2 CONT wire to make the fence. Tese posts we are making, when set, they probably will
2 CONT last the next generation, thay are so large. They hauled the sand rock that the
2 CONT cellar was dug and walled up with from over by Perry, Oklahoma, that is about
2 CONT 18 miles to the east of the homestead.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Just certain towns were set up in the counties for County Seats where supplies
2 CONT could be bought, such as lumber, etc. and hauled by wagons. They started
2 CONT building barns, graneries to store grain in. Each year they would tear out more
2 CONT sod to farm and plant more ground. Some of the Cutter relatives of ous began to
2 CONT buy land that some of the homesteaders had starved out and sold. There was
2 CONT quite a few within a mile or so from grandfather's home. Cousins all grew up
2 CONT together as neighbors going to the same schools. At first they had to go north
2 CONT of Douglas which was the little town 2 1/4 miles west of frandfather. Later a
2 CONT nice one room school was built on a corner of Uncle Joe's east quarter, so that
2 CONT was only a mile east. They saw cousins almost every day at school or working
2 CONT together. One  day when grandfather was in the field, grandmother came out to
2 CONT tell him the cows had gotten in the corn. She saw smoke coming out of the barn
2 CONT and when she got there, Mabel, Maud and Harry were setting in the manger
2 CONT watching straw burn that they had piled up to light. If it had been a little
2 CONT longer they would have been burned up. So they got a good whipping. Their
2 CONT brother, Harry, ran in the house and hid under the bed; ;he was 21/2 yearts
2 CONT old. They were old enough to know better but it did happen. (Aunt Maude told us
2 CONT of this.)
2 CONT 
2 CONT One of the teachers that taught in this country school was Angie Debo and she
2 CONT lived in the Irey home for two yearts. She taught at the little school they
2 CONT called "Cracker Box"which later was Diamond District 94.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Mother and Aunt Maude helped grandpa plow and do field work when they got old
2 CONT enough to handle the horses. Grandfather bought mother and Aunt Maude a horse
2 CONT and buggy so they could go places. Grandfather took good care of the horses. He
2 CONT worked when it was time to do field work from 6 to 6 in the day time with an
2 CONT hour rest at noon. He rested them all day on Sunday and stopped to let them
2 CONT rest in the field so the didn't get tired out too much.
2 CONT 
2 CONT The dyptheria was awful bad. Harry and Lula died three days apart when they
2 CONT were about 11 and 12 years old. They are buried 5 miles soulth of Covington on
2 CONT 74 highway where there was a church named Bethel. The church is gone but the
2 CONT cemetery remains. Two children were born to the family later. Iva Anna on
2 CONT December 19, 1904 and Raymond A. on May 15, 1909.
2 CONT 
2 CONT When one of the Uncles names Sam Cutter and Bessie moved down to Chattanoga,
2 CONT Oklahoma (this town is close to Lawton, Oklahoma where Fort Sill was an Army
2 CONT Base already then) mother went down by train. Trains were crossing the state
2 CONT all directions by this time and when she went to visit the Sam Cutters she was
2 CONT about 18 years old. While there she met out father Isaac (Ike) Roelse.
2 CONT 
2 CONT He was young cowboy, I guess you could say (he broke horses to ride). He was a
2 CONT plasterer by trade in those days. They lived in dugouts, which they plastered
2 CONT the dirt walls, and built chimneys. The plastered wooden fram buildings inside
2 CONT were later to be painted, till paper was made to be put on the walls. Mother
2 CONT stayed awhile with this aunt and uncle. Daddy's parents didn't live too far
2 CONT away. When they went to church Ike would come and go to church with them so
2 CONT they got pretty well acquainted. His father was a veteranarian and Doctor of
2 CONT people, too. In those days there weren't very many Doctors or Vets.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Isaac came to the Irey home to get married on July 1, 1908, to Mabel Irey by
2 CONT Rev. W. J. Forshee and witnessed by J. P. Gibson and Angie Debo. They went back
2 CONT to Chattanoga, Oklahoma,  to live. While there, a son was born who didn't live
2 CONT and is buried in a cemetery west to the corner of town, north 3 miles, west 2
2 CONT miles. While they lived there grandmother, Elizabeth Roelse, died and she is
2 CONT buried in the same cemetery. In 1917, grandfather Peter Roelse, died in Enid,
2 CONT Oklahoma, and father took his body to be buried with grandmother.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Mother and daddy later had two sons, Irey Lewis and Arthur Alvin, and they
2 CONT lived in Arkansas awhile before moving to a farm two miles east and 1/2 north
2 CONT of Douglas, known as "Grandpa's Eighty". I was born Ellen Elizabeth. My folks
2 CONT found it hard to try to farm at this time so they moved to Enid. daddy worked
2 CONT for the Enid Water Works, night watched for Newmans, and later worked at
2 CONT Champlin Refinery and helped to take care of lawns at the city park. We
2 CONT children were getting prety good size. We had two more sisters born while in
2 CONT Enid; Dorothy June and Maudie Esther. Daddy said town was no place to raise
2 CONT children. Daddy got to rent a farm and bought the horses and cattle from Mr.
2 CONT Scott Rather, two miles east and one mile south of covington.
2 CONT 
2 CONT About the time we were getting ready to move a neighbor lady that we had all
2 CONT become good friends with, died leaving a large family. He wasn't able to take
2 CONT care of them, so he put some out in homes. One was about the age of Irey so the
2 CONT folks felt sorry for him. They adopted Emory, 10 years old. Then we moved to
2 CONT the farm. We all learned a lot. One time the boys saw a black and white kitty
2 CONT on the train track which went beside the farm. They tried to get the kitty off
2 CONT the track and it turned out to be a skunk. So mother had the boys bury their
2 CONT clothes for awhile and clean up. We hard hard times with six children to make a
2 CONT living for. We learned to milk cows and usually I got more milk on myself than
2 CONT in the bucket. I can remember when the 64 highway was being built. They used
2 CONT horses to make the shaping and grading of the sides so the cement could be run.
2 CONT Men brought teams from all over the state to work on this highway. Even our
2 CONT father worked, then on week-ends. They would leave our yeard full of wagons and
2 CONT teams for father to water and feed until Monday morning and get back on the
2 CONT job.
2 CONT 
2 CONT I was always tagging daddy around and one day when he was going to work some
2 CONT groundI stood in the gate to keep the mule colts from following their mothers
2 CONT that daddy was driving, until daddy could get through the gate, to shut it. The
2 CONT colts kicked me and knocked me down. I was knocked unconscience for awhile. So
2 CONT I learned in farm life one had to be cautious. About two years later we moved
2 CONT over on Grandpa Irey's farm as he and grandmother had moved to Enid, we Aunt
2 CONT Iva and Uncle Raymond could go to high school. While here we still worked hard
2 CONT and learned a lot.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Daddy would put soles on our shoes, mother made all our clothes; boys shirts,
2 CONT under clothes and all we girl's clothes but socks and shoes. Some relatives
2 CONT would send us clothes they couldn't use any more and mother and Aunt Dora and
2 CONT Aunt Bessie would make clothes over for us. The boys worked with horses,
2 CONT helping daddy with field work, raising big gardens, milking a bunch of cows,
2 CONT hogs, chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks and guinnies. We raised most of our
2 CONT living. All had to be done with horses. We would go to Douglas to church every
2 CONT Sunday if the weather wasn't too bad. A lot of the time, Uncle Joe's would come
2 CONT along with hay bales and quilts over the wagons. We children, mother and Aunt
2 CONT Dora would set on bales and have lanterns in there to help keep us warm. Daddy
2 CONT and Uncle Joe would ride in the seat to drive the horses. He had a blanket and
2 CONT gloves made from a horse that had died that he had tanned. This was real warm
2 CONT and broke the cold.
2 CONT 
2 CONT I can't hardly remember when we were just family alone. There was always
2 CONT someone staying with us; an Aunt Lib, Grandfather Irey's sister, stayed a long
2 CONT time; Uncle Sam Eisen and Aunt Iva; Grandmother Irey and Uncle Raymone. One
2 CONT time there were 13 of us.
2 CONT 
2 CONT When Arthur was in the 7th or 8th grade, he had penumonia real bad. We used to
2 CONT have lots of snow blocked roads. This was the way it was when Arthur was sick.
2 CONT When he got over it the Dr. said he better not get it again. So mother,
2 CONT grandmother, Arthur and Raymond went to Colorado and stayed all summer so he
2 CONT could get over the penumonia better. They rented a restaurant and ran it to
2 CONT help pay their rent and bills. While they were gone, we girls learned to cook,
2 CONT wash and all of the things to keep up a home. We made bread, dressed chickens,
2 CONT even if we had to carry it to the field for daddy or the boys to kill for us.
2 CONT We learned to pick collon, chop cotton, hoe corn. We all had a busy life and a
2 CONT lot of happy times.
2 CONT 
2 CONT To make Christmas money I would go at night with brother Arthur to hunt skunks
2 CONT and oppossoms. We had a good dog but the folks wouldn't let us use a gun so
2 CONT Arthur had gotten a hedge limb that made a good club. We would take it, the
2 CONT lantern and the dog, and when it got dark we would strike out. We were told to
2 CONT go just 1 1/2 miles north or 1/2 mile south. When the dog would bark we would
2 CONT start running in the direction we could hear the dog.  When we got close I took
2 CONT the lantern and Arthur the dog would kill the skunk with the stick. They had to
2 CONT be careful not to ruin the hide for we didn't get much for skins if they were
2 CONT torn. We got 50 cents for opposoms and 75 cents for skunks, if they had two
2 CONT stipes it was $1.50, depending on the season. Most every time we went out we
2 CONT came back with all we could carry. We didn't get stunk on except from carrying
2 CONT them. I'll bet we smelled anyway! Our noses would run and our eyes sure
2 CONT watered. The dog usually got the worst of the smell.  I think daddy helped skin
2 CONT and stretch hides on boards with salt to cure them.
2 CONT 
2 CONT We picked cotton for Uncle Joe. In the fall, indians would come through from
2 CONT out west going to Pawnee. We would be coming home from school when they would
2 CONT be starting camp on Uncle Joe's east place in a low spot where a pond is now.
2 CONT That was always quite a sight to see. They were always trying to trade horses.
2 CONT Then we came into the days of cars and,  later, tractors. That was when daddy
2 CONT quit farming for he tried to drive the car and ran it up a bank west of the
2 CONT home. Then he never could get the hang of tractors. Mother was getting tired of
2 CONT the hard work on the farm.
2 CONT 
2 CONT All of we children were getting married. Arthur had met a Covington girl, Ruth
2 CONT Boepple. They went together until she finished school and they were married
2 CONT first. I had met Lloyd Truman Roberts at a square dance party. We went together
2 CONT three years and were married. Maudie had met and gone with Chester Paul Mercer
2 CONT from Hayward and they got merried. Dorothy had met Ruth's brother,  Edward
2 CONT Boepple, and gone with him. When she graduated from high school, they were
2 CONT married in Kansas. Irey met and married Anna Mae Murry in Kentucky. Later, Irey
2 CONT was drafted in the Army (World War II). Irey died June 19, 1979. Emory had left
2 CONT our family and went to Pampa, Texas, to his sister when he was a freshman or
2 CONT sophmore in high school. So he didn't come back to be part of our family. I
2 CONT lost Lloyd April 4, 1961. We all had children but Irey. They all were little at
2 CONT the same time and all grown up at one time. I had married Lloyds brother, Ellis
2 CONT Roberts, June 19, 1964, and he died February 3, 1979, with a massive heart
2 CONT attack.
2 CONT (Note: My mother wanted to write this story including the Cutters and Ireys
2 CONT because if the family history isn't written up on these two families this
2 CONT information will eventually be lost history for future generations. Aunt Mude

2 CONT I would like to mention my Grandmother Irey (my father, Raymond's mother). I
2 CONT was a very young child, maybe four or five years old, and she was up in years.
2 CONT Every day she took a set time to be alone and read her bible. She never missed
2 CONT a day reading out of it. The reason I know this is because she lived with us
2 CONT during the last years of her life. She was so kind and sweet and I remember
2 CONT missing her so very much after she passed away.

2 CONT      "When the husband is gone, the cattle get out. And that's the way it was on the Simon Ir
2 CONC ey farm 4 miles north of Crescent, O.T., one hot July day in 1889 (this date should probabl
2 CONC y be 1893). Of course, the wife Ellen Cutter Irey went immediately to the field to try to dri
2 CONC ve the cattle back into the pasture. It was then that she saw smoke coming from the top of th
2 CONC eir straw-covered barn. Running to the barn she found her three children, Mabel, Maude, and H
2 CONC arry,sitting in the barn with a burning pile of grass in front of them. They were going to ma
2 CONC ke some smoke signals. The two girls got a switching right then and there, but Harry was abl
2 CONC e to get away, run to the house and hide under the bed.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      The Simon Irey family had come to this farm in Old Oklahoma to wait the
2 CONT opening of the Cherokee Strip. While there, they farmed the land. But when the great day came
2 CONC , Sept. 16, 1893, Mrs. Irey, her children, and an uncle, Orville Cutter, drove to Marshall t
2 CONC o watch the start of the big race. Simon rode a white Texas pony. A friend, Joe Gibson, rod
2 CONC e a sorrel mule. After going 8 miles north they staked the claims about 2 1/2 miles east of D
2 CONC ouglas. Simon build a two-room, story and half, house. Joe Gibson chose to live in a dugout.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Somehow the Irey family survived drought, storms, and hunger. They were
2 CONT more fortunate than some of their neighbors as they had a few chickens, some
2 CONT pigs and a cow. They took wheat to a mill in Marshall and had it ground.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      One summer of childhood is especially vivid to Maude. It was the summer in which her gra
2 CONC ndmother died (Simon's mother) and Maude's father had to take her back to Marion, Ohio, for b
2 CONC urial. All summer long Maude and her sister Mabel plowed the fields. What Maude remembers mos
2 CONC t was the terrible heat and the long, long days.
2 CONT 
2 CONT OBITUARY:From Enid Morning News, 26 Jun, 1930: IREY SERVICES MAY BE HELD ON
2 CONT SUNDAY. The funeral of S. J. Irey, 72, Garfield County pioneer who died in his sleep sometim
2 CONC e Thursday night, will probably be held Sunday. Exact time for the services will be set whe
2 CONC n word has been received from out-of-town relatives.

2 CONT      Mr. Irey is survived by his widow, a daughter, Iva and a son Raymond, of
2 CONT the home, 720 East Broadway, and two other daughters, Mrs. Mable Roelse of
2 CONT Douglas and Mrs. Maude Daugherty of Waukomis.

2 CONT      The body is being cared for at the Henniger-Allen Funeral Home.

2 CONT Roelse, 78, who died Sunday afternoon in a local hospital following a long
2 CONT illness.

2 CONT      Rev. Bill Bushness will officiate with burial in Enid Cemetary.
2 CONT Pallbearers will be Tommy Atterberry, H.H. Williams, Gene Brumfield, Erman
2 CONT Swiggart, Harold Brown and Frank North.

2 CONT      Born in Newton, KS, Mrs. Roelse made the run with her parents, who staked
2 CONT a claim east of Douglas.  She attended a country school northeast of Douglas.
2 CONT Mrs. Roelse was married July 1, 1908, at Douglas to Isaac Roelse. They moved to
2 CONT Chattanooga and returned to Douglas, living there until 1940, when they moved
2 CONT to Enid. She was employed as a practical nurse at Enid General Hospital for a
2 CONT number of years.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Mrs. Roelse was a member of the Davis Park Christian Church, White Shrine
2 CONT and Ruth Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star, to which she belonged for 60
2 CONT years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac, in 1953, an infant son
2 CONT in 1909, and a daughter, Mrs. Ed (Dorothy) Boepple, in 1962.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Survivors include: three sons, Irey and Arthur of Enid, Emory of Pampa,
2 CONT TX; two daughters, Mrs. Ellis (Ellen) Roberts, Marshall, and Mrs. Paul (Maudie)
2 CONT Mercer, Lewisville, TX; a brother, Raymond Irey of Waukomis; two sisters, Maude
2 CONT Daugherty, Waukomis, and Iva Brown, Joplin MO; 17 grandchildren and 14
2 CONT great-grandchildren.

2 CONT      Maude Irey was born 30 Nov 1888, at Newton, Kansas. Her father, Simon Irey,
2 CONT made the run into the Cherokee Strip and settled 2 1/2 miles east of Douglas,
2 CONT OT. She has primarily lived in the Douglas and Waukomis communities.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      She started working on the farm at a young age and attended the "Cracker
2 CONT Box" school up to the 8th grade. One of her teachers was Angie Debo. Ms. Debo
2 CONT is a nationally known historian, a member of the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, and a
2 CONT winner of two major national literary awards, the A.A. Knopf Fellowship prize
2 CONT for her novel "Prairie City", and the Dunning Prize of the American Historical
2 CONT Association. Her portrait, painted by Charles Banks Wilson, hangs in the state
2 CONT capitol. She has written 13 books. Ms. Debo roomed with the Irey family. She
2 CONT and Maude remained lifelong friends. As a young woman Maude studied drapery
2 CONT making in Oklahoma City.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      She had said she was a fast starter at some things and got a slow start at
2 CONT others. She milked her first cow when she was 6 years old, but she was 86 when
2 CONT she first tried her hand at painting.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      She married Les Daugherty on Aug. 23, 1917, and they moved to Waukomis
2 CONT where they rented a thirteen room hotel from Les's brother, but they were only
2 CONT able to operate it eleven months when Les was called to war. Maude followed her
2 CONT young husband to Texas so she could be near him during his training. She took a
2 CONT position in the Officer's Mess Hall, but she had to walk two miles back and
2 CONT forth to work. That fall Les got the flu. Thousands died throughout the United
2 CONT States with the flu at that time. Maude had to walk three miles to visit him at
2 CONT the camp site. There was no hospital, just cots lined up outside the barracks.
2 CONT But on Nov. 11, 1918 the Armistice was signed and Maude came back to Waukomis.
2 CONT Her husband arrived home in December.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      They bought the brother's hotel and operated it three years before
2 CONT building a new structure on the Waukomis main street called "Daugherty's
2 CONT Luncheonette". Two years later they build a 40' x 100' addition which was a
2 CONT skating rink and basketball court. The local school had no court, so they
2 CONT played their games here on what was probably the finest court in Garfield
2 CONT County at that time. People drove for miles to get to skate on this fine roller
2 CONT rink. The community was very fortunate to have such a fine amusement place for
2 CONT both young and old. Maude repaired roller skates and kept them running, kept
2 CONT the rink clean, helped run the cafe and did some baking.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      One time Maude and Les were special honored guests at the annual alumni
2 CONT banquet when hundreds of former students tried to show their appreciation to
2 CONT Maude and Les for the many years of happiness they had brought to the
2 CONT community.  The business was sold in 1957 and the couple entered other kinds of
2 CONT business in the community.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Maude enjoyed quilting and made and gave away 30 quilts. She drove her car
2 CONT until January of 1987 (she was nearly 99 years old). She was known for her
2 CONT friendliness and spunk, for lending a helping hand to friends. She is a 75 year
2 CONT member of Order of Eastern Star and belonged to the Waukomis Chapter. She first
2 CONT joined OES at Marshall. She was was member of Highland Jolly Peppers Extension
2 CONT Homemakers Group. She also enjoyed fishing.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      She was a long time member of the United Methodist Church of Waukomis
2 CONT where she taught Sunday School. After Les died in 1974 she continued to live in
2 CONT her home in Waukomis until her death.
2 CONT 
2 CONT OBITUARY:The funeral for Maude Daugherty, 99, who died Sunday at an Enid
2 CONT hospital, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Waukomis First United Methodist Church
2 CONT with the Rev. Kent Wood officiating. Burial will be at Waukomis Cemetery,
2 CONT directed by Brown Funeral Home.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      The former Maude Irey was born Nov. 30, 1888, in Newton, Kan. At an
2 CONT early age she moved with her family to a farm east of Douglas. She attended
2 CONT Cracker Box School. On Aug. 23, 1917, she married John Les Daughterty, in Enid.
2 CONT During World War I, they both worked as cooks at Fort Sill in Lawton. They then
2 CONT operated a cafe and skating rink in Waukomis for 50 years, retiring in 1950. He
2 CONT died in 1974.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Mrs. Daugherty was a member of Waukomis First United Methodist Church, The
2 CONT Waukomis Study Club and The Sons and Daughters of the Cherokee Strip Pioneers.
2 CONT She was honored as grand marshal in Enid's 1986 Cherokee Strip Celebration
2 CONT parade.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      A 75-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, she first joined at
2 CONT Marshall and later at Waukomis. She also taught Sunday school and was a member
2 CONT of Highland Jolly Peppers Extension Homemakers Group.

2 CONT      Survivors include a sister-in-law, Ester Irey of Waukomis, and a
2 CONT brother-in-law, Harry Brown of Joplin, MO.; and several nieces and nephews.

2 CONT brothers. Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Waukomis First
2 CONT United Methodist Church.

2 CONT Mercantile Company at Joplin.

2 CONT there to Mr. and Mrs. Chester HUBBARD reads as follows: "Dear Mr.Mrs. Chester
2 CONT Hubbard. Well I landed March 16, at La Guaira and am now in Caracas which is
2 CONT the capital of Venezuela. It is just 30 miles from La Guaira. It takes about a
2 CONT week to get trucks through the Customs house so will be here a week. I was on
2 CONT the water 14 days I sure got all the water traveling I want but sure had a good
2 CONT time. Well I have a 400 mile drive from here where I am going. I have six
2 CONT natives so won't have anything to do but boss. I am going to Sindad (?) Bolivar
2 CONT it is a town about 30,000 in eastern Venezuela. We made 3 stops on the way down
2 CONT here. Port au Prince, San Domingo, which are both on the same island, the
2 CONT island is Haiti that is where Columbus landed in 1492. Columbus tomb is there I
2 CONT seen it and also the tree which he tied his boat to it is a mahogany tree about
2 CONT 12 foot thick. I taken some Kodak pictures but havent gotten them developed
2 CONT yet. The next stop was Williamsted on the island of Curacao it is a Dutch town
2 CONT sure was a pretty place. Well we could buy the best scotch whiskey on the boat
2 CONT for $1.50 a quart I drank some I thought your kidneys might need it see. ha ha.
2 CONT Well I got the gun through O.K. I carried it on me they don't search your
2 CONT person. Well, I don't have much time two write so will sign off hoping to hear

2 CONT      Irey was born May 15, 1909, at Douglas, to Simon and Ellen Irey. He
2 CONT first attended the Crackerbox School, east of Douglas, and later attended
2 CONT schools in Waukomis and Enid, graduating from Enid High School. On Oct. 24,
2 CONT 1936, he and Esther Felber of Bison were married. From 1931 until 1947, Irey
2 CONT was a driller for Gulf Oil Co. and worked for that company in South America,
2 CONT Louisiana and Texas, returning to Oklahoma in 1947 to the Waukomis area where
2 CONT he farmed.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      While residing in Waukomis, he served on the city council for several terms
2 CONT and was a retired member of the Waukomis volunteer fire department. He was also
2 CONT a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Bison.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Survivors include his wife, Esther; three children, Mrs. Robert (Jane)
2 CONT RobertsS, Winston-Salem, NC, Thomas Irey, Norman, and Mrs. Judith Winchester,
2 CONT Enid; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Harold Brown, Joplin MO,

2 CONT the Henniger-Allen Funeral Home. Mr. Roelse died at his home, 720 East
2 CONT Broadway, early Friday morning after an illness of three months.

2 CONT      A native of Shelton, Iowa, he came to Oklahoma from Texas in 1904,
2 CONT settling near Spencer. He moved to Enid and made a permanent residence here in
2 CONT 1940.

2 CONT      Survivors include his wife, Mabel, of the home; three daughters, Mrs.
2 CONT Lloyd Roberts, Douglas, Mrs. Ed Boepple, Ellenwood, Kansas, and Mrs. Paul

2 CONT OBITUARY:From the Enid Morning News:"The funeral for Ellis Clark Roberts, 64,
2 CONT Marshall, will be at 2 pm Wednesday in the Douglas Christian Union Church with
2 CONT the Rev. Dennis Wistrom officiating. Roberts will be buried in the IOOF
2 CONT Cemetary at Marshall, with Henniger-Allen Funeral Home in charge of
2 CONT arrangements.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Those who wish may make contributions in Roberts' memory to the Douglas
2 CONT Christion Union Church, the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation Heart Division
2 CONT or the Estarl Fund of the Order of Eastern Star. The funeral home will
2 CONT serve as custodian of contributions.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      Roberts died suddenly Saturday evening at his home. He was born Jan 11,
2 CONT 1915, in the Marshall area on a farm. He attended schools in Covington, Enid
2 CONT and Marshall. After his mother's death he lived with Mr. and Mrs. Burl Cline.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      After his marriage to Elsa Jane Poe, Aug 17, 1947, they lived and farmed
2 CONT in the Marshall area. She died in 1962. Roberts and Ellen Roelse Roberts were
2 CONT married June 29, 1964, in Enid. They made their home east of Covington where
2 CONT he farmed. Roberts was member of the American Legion and was past commander of
2 CONT the Zollner Post at Marshall.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      He was a veteran of WWII and served in the European Theater of Operations
2 CONT as well as in Alaska. Roberts was a member of the First United Methodist Church
2 CONT in Enid.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      In addition to his wife Ellen of the home, he is survived by four
2 CONT step-children; Lloyd R. Roberts, Edmond; Jerry D. Roberts, Spokane, WA; Mrs.
2 CONT Duane (Esther) Roever, Hitchcock; and Mrs. Tony (Berneice) Shaw, Warner; a
2 CONT niece, Mrs. Patty Poe Hybarger of Tecumseh, who grew up in the Roberts home; 13
2 CONT step grandchildren; eight step great-grandchildren; a brother Cecil L. Roberts
2 CONT of Enid and a sister, Mrs. Valoise Bristow, Ponca City. He was preceded in deathby a brother.

2 CONT      John Leslie (Les) Daugherty, 81, Waukomis, died late Thursday in his home
2 CONT in Waukomis. He was born at Baird, KS, and came to Oklahoma with his parents in
2 CONT 1912, settling at Ada. Two years later they moved to Douglas and the following
2 CONT year to Waukomis.
2 CONT 
2 CONT      He was in the US Army during World War I and returned to Waukomis after
2 CONT his discharge. He and Maude I. IREY were married August 23, 1917, in Enid.

2 CONT of San Gabriel, CA, two nieces, Mrs. Idell Rogers of Enid and Mrs. Muriel
2 CONT Beller of Anadarko, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Frank Daugherty of Enid.

2 CONT      Funeral rites will be at 1 pm Sunday in the Waukomis United Methodist
2 CONT Church with Rev. Richard F. Mauldin and Dr. C. T. Shades officiating. Interment
2 CONT will be in the Waukomis Cemetery under the direction of the Brown Funeral Home.
2 CONT The body will lie in state in the funeral home until noon Sunday.

2 CONT      Those who wish may make memorials to the Oklahoma Medical Research
2 CONT Foundation Cancer Fund or to the Waukomis United Methodist Church Building
2 CONT Fund. Brown's will serve as custodian of the funds.
