He was the son of Rev. Williamson Gibson and Mary Glore. He was one of 1 2 CONC 6 children, 13 lived to adulthood. Three of the children died due to typhus. According to Joe 2 CONC , his father was "a red-headed, Scot-Irish, hell-fire and brimstone, circuit riding Primitiv 2 CONC e Baptist preacher." They also lived in Crawford and Oregon Counties, Missouri, until they se 2 CONC ttled near Pine, Ripley County, Missouri (after Joe had left home). 2 CONT Joe left home at a young age and worked as a cowboy on the cattle drives between Texas and K 2 CONC ansas. He had only had two years of schooling when he left home and was 21 years old when h 2 CONC e got the equivalent of an eighth grade education. He was a self-taught man and had a very br 2 CONC ight, active and inquiring mind and could read, write and express himself very well. He had a 2 CONC uburn hair and blue-green eyes and was 6' tall until a fall from an apple tree broke both leg 2 CONC s. His legs did not heal properly and after that he was bow-legged and it also affected hi 2 CONC s walk a bit. He had a beautiful tenor voice and sang a solo in church just a few weeks befor 2 CONC e his death at age 85. He learned to read music by the old shaped note method and had a son 2 CONC g book with the shaped notes that he sang from every evening after his bible study. 2 CONT While living in Kansas in early 1893 he heard of the opening of the Cherokee Strip in Oklaho 2 CONC ma where people wanting their own land could participate in the "great land run of 1893" an 2 CONC d if they were lucky, they would be able to stake a claim on 160 acres. He came to Oklahoma 2 CONC , along with Simon and Ellen (Cutter) Irey and stayed with his brother-in-law, Orville Cutte 2 CONC r, who had secured his land in Logan County around 1889. He was elated when he got his clai 2 CONC m and immediately set about building a dugout where he and Sarah could live until he could ge 2 CONC t a proper frame house built. 2 CONT He farmed, raising wheat and other grains and large plentiful gardens. For awhile he raise 2 CONC d broom corn and made brooms to sell. With the advent of the automobile, he was also a car de 2 CONC aler, working from his farm home, for awhile. He donated the northeast corner of his land s 2 CONC o a school house could be built there. It was named Diamond School but everyone called it "Cr 2 CONC ackerbox". 2 CONT It was at church that he met his second wife, Dora May Piper. She said the first thing tha 2 CONC t impressed her was his devotion to his two little girls. He was struck by her dark brown sp 2 CONC arkling eyes and dark hair, 21 inch wiast and shyness. He was 43 when he married Dora, age 21 2 CONC , and they were to have 9 children, Dora's parents were John Piper and Josephine "Josie" Woll 2 CONC am and both were of german descent (See Chapter 10) Her mother died in childbirth when Dora w 2 CONC as 8 years old. John then married Alice Roberts, who raised the 6 children. 2 CONT Dora was a soft spoken, gentle and compassionate lady, always ready to help a neighbor, an 2 CONC d raised a large family. I never heard her complain or talk about other people. She worked lo 2 CONC ng days just like Joe. She did a lot of canning and preserving; made most of the family clo 2 CONC thes; did nice hand work and never sat in a chair without a piece of mending in her hands. 2 CONT Joe and Dora were active in the Douglas Christian Union church and after they moved to Dougl 2 CONC as they never missed Sunday morning sunday school, church service, Sunday evening service an 2 CONC d prayer meeting on Wednesday nights. Joe had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to play pr 2 CONC actical jokes on his family and friends. He was an avid Democrat and loved to "discuss" polit 2 CONC ics with his father-in-law, John Piper, who was only one year older than Joe and a staunch Re 2 CONC publican. He was a hard worker and worked long days to support his harge family. 2 CONT In September, 1928, they moved to a dairy farm near Covington. After nine months they move 2 CONC d near Hayward and ran a dairy there for a year. Then they moved to Covington where he ra 2 CONC n a small grocery store specializing in his home butchered meat. The depression was on by thi 2 CONC s time and times were very hard. He never refused credit to anyone in need of groceries to fe 2 CONC ed their families knowing it was unlikely they would ever be able to pay. After his mother-in 2 CONC -law, Alice Piper, died in December, 1932, they moved to Douglas to make their home with Joh 2 CONC n Piper. He immediately set about buying all the vacant lots in Douglas for back taxes, the 2 CONC n he proceeded to clear them and plant them all in fruit and vegetables. The cellar was alway 2 CONC s full for the winter with all kinds of home grown and home canned meat, vegetables and frui 2 CONC t and the smoke house was full of cured beef and pork. He raised cattle, pigs, chickens, plan 2 CONC ted an orchard, and sold milk to townspeople. 2 CONT He used horses to work the ground and there was a large barn, granary, pig pen, coal shed, k 2 CONC indling shed, chicken house, garage, and of course the outhouse, behind their house on the la 2 CONC rge lot. He had a pasture at the edge of town for the cows and horses. The horses, Dan and Fa 2 CONC nny, eventually died at a ripe old age, and Dora thought that now he wouldn't work so hard. M 2 CONC uch to her dismay he bought a pair of mules and kept on working as hard as ever. 2 CONT Sundays were always a big day in their home and at times all six leaves were used in the tab 2 CONC le and they still needed two sittings to handle all the children and grandchildren that had c 2 CONC ome to visit. All of their social activites had to do with the school, church, community an 2 CONC d family. 2 CONT Joe did not have a child until he was 40 and then raised 10 children. I was born when he wa 2 CONC s nearly 67 years old. Mother told me that one of his prayers was that he remain healthy an 2 CONC d able to work until I became of age. He died at the home in Douglas at the age of 85, whe 2 CONC n I was 18. I never knew him to spend one day in bed but in 1947 the barn and all of the outb 2 CONC uildings burned and he seemed to lose the twinkle in his eye. Soon after that he became ill a 2 CONC nd lived for only 2 weeks. 2 CONT With his family gathered around his bedside his last words were "I see the light" with a l 2 CONC ook of wonderment on his face. He was a devoted family man and was respected and loved by man 2 CONC y people. After Joe's death Dora lived in the home, with the exception of a year in Oklahom 2 CONC a City with her daughter and a time spent in a nursing home after she broke a hip. Her daught 2 CONC er, Lula, moved to Douglas to live with Dora so she could be in her own home. She died ther 2 CONC e in 1970 after a lengthy illness with her daughters at her side. She welcomed death because 2 CONC , after many years, she was "going to be with Joe". Joe and Dora were god-fearing, loving pe 2 CONC ople and it is with gratitude and pride that I call them Mom and Dad. 2 CONT 2 CONT (My memories of my parents do not include living on the family homestead since they moved fro 2 CONC m there when I was born, so I write mostly of their later years.) 1 CHAN 2 DATE 15 Aug 2002 3 TIME 18:50:13 1 OBJE 2 FORM JPG 2 FILE D:\Photographs\JoeGibson\Gibsn6.JPG 2 TITL Joe Gibson 2 NOTE 1862-1947 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM Y 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 0 @I8@ INDI 1 NAME Sarah Elizabeth /Cutter/ 2 SURN Cutter 2 GIVN Sarah Elizabeth 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 7 Jan 1870 2 PLAC , Mo 1 DEAT 2 DATE 9 Feb 1905 2 PLAC Douglas, Garfield, Ok 1 BURI 2 PLAC Covington, Garfield, Ok 1 _UID 5739B9148065D51195234445535400001001 1 FAMS @F14@ 1 FAMC @F16@ 1 NOTE SARAH CUTTER GIBSON 2 CONT By Betty Jo Gibson Scott, 1996 2 CONT Sarah was born in DeKalb County, Missouri and came to Harvey County, Kansas in the Halstead/ 2 CONC Newton area with her parents when she was was about 12 years old. Census records show her fat 2 CONC her was a farmer. Shortly after they moved to Kansas her father, Henry Cutter, Sr., died sudd 2 CONC enly. He was only 48 years old. This must have been a great loss to the large family of nin 2 CONC e children ranging in age from one to nineteen. A great deal of responsibility was placed o 2 CONC n the shoulders of the two oldest children, Orville & Richard, since they were 17 and 19. Sar 2 CONC ah was 13 and her older sister, Ellen, was 15 and her younger sister, Molly, was 11. The fou 2 CONC r youngest children were Henry, 9; Sam, 6; Nate, 4 and John, 1. The three sisters were of hel 2 CONC p in the care of the four young boys. 2 CONT When Sarah was 19 she had met a young cowboy, Joe Gibson, 27 years old, and they were marri 2 CONC ed in Halstead, Kansas. He was a close friend of her brothers and may have ridden the cattl 2 CONC e drives with the older ones. In 1993 they moved to the Cherokee Outlet in Garfield County, I 2 CONC ndian Territory, where Joe had claimed land east of what was to become Douglas, Oklahoma. H 2 CONC e built a one room dugout for them to live in until he could get a house built. He soon adde 2 CONC d another room and they had a two room dugout but they had to come up out of one to go into t 2 CONC he other. 2 CONT Sarah's sister, Ellen, had married Simon Irey, and Simon and Joe made the race for land toge 2 CONC ther and settled on adjoining claims. Her younger sister, Molly, had married Dan Bierschbac 2 CONC h in Halstead and they remained in Kansas and made their home there. 2 CONT Sarah had two children born before1902 but they did not survive and were buried beneath th 2 CONC e china berry trees on the family homestead. Finally in 1902, after she had been married 13 y 2 CONC ears, she gave birth to a little girl, Ethel. Then in 1905 she gave birth to another little g 2 CONC irl, Blanche. However Sarah died due to complications from childbirth a week later. Joe was o 2 CONC verwhelmed with the loss of his wife and the care of two motherless babies. Sarah's sister, E 2 CONC llen, who lived nearby, was a great help to Joe with the care of the two little girls but h 2 CONC e had them with him as much as possible. Her mother, Sarah, died when she was three years old. In 1906 he 2 CONC r father, Joe, married Dora Piper, and she became mother to Ethel and her baby sister, Blanc 2 CONC he. As 8 other children came along Ethel had a great deal of responsibility helping with th 2 CONC e family. She remembers she and Blanche had to do breakfast dishes early in the morning befor 2 CONC e they left for school. They walked the mile to school. 2 CONT Ethel attended school at Diamond School on the northeastern corner of her father's land an 2 CONC d then attended Douglas High School. She graduated in 1921 with the third class to graduate f 2 CONC rom Douglas. She attended Phillips University and stayed with her Aunt Ellen ( Cutter) Irey 2 CONC . Her teaching certificate was issued 17 Aug 1922. She taught in various local rural grade sc 2 CONC hools in the community. She last taught in Covington in 1949/50. 2 CONT She married Chester Charles "Hub" Hubbard in 1923 and had to stop teaching for awhile becaus 2 CONC e the state laws required a teacher to be single. When the law was changed she resumed teachi 2 CONC ng. Hub graduated from Enid High School about 1919. They lived for short periods in Kansas, I 2 CONC daho and Enid, OK, but they primarily lived on the farm homesteaded by her father-in-law, Cha 2 CONC rley Hubbard, northeast of Douglas. In 1969 they sold their farm and retired to Port Aransas 2 CONC , Texas. They returned to Covington in 1980, where they lived until their deaths. 2 CONT When the 8 mm cameras came out Hub bought one and they took family gathering films beginnin 2 CONC g with our father's funeral in 1947. Ethel enjoyed their years in Texas and the various frien 2 CONC ds and family that visited them there. She took walks on the beach nearly daily and had a lar 2 CONC ge collection of shells. She became interested in making ceramic pieces. She was very talente 2 CONC d in knitting, crocheting, embroidery and tatting and made many beautiful things and gave awa 2 CONC y many of them. She was never idle. Even when she sat down to rest or visit, her hands wer 2 CONC e busy with handwork. Among many of Hub's occupations was the construction business. He contr 2 CONC acted to build several houses in Enid during the post World War II boom. He had an earth movi 2 CONC ng business in the Douglas area for many years and was also in the shrimping business in Texa 2 CONC s. While living on the farm they raised sheep and Ethel learned to gather and spin her own ya 2 CONC rn. 2 CONT Ethel and Hub did not have any children that lived past childbirth so they enjoyed their man 2 CONC y neices and nephews and children of neighbors and friends. They were always having some of t 2 CONC hem for a day or two and enjoyed taking them on trips, swimming, camping and boating. Severa 2 CONC l of the kids learned to ski behind Hub's boat. I remember one time they took me to a barn da 2 CONC nce and I was really wide-eyed hearing the band and watching all the pretty couples dancing 2 CONC . I really hated it that I fell asleep on a pile of coats on a bench and missed out on half o 2 CONC f the evening. 2 CONT When a relative or neighbor was in need Ethel was there to help or bring food. She was a mem 2 CONC ber of the Home Demonstration Club and other various clubs depending on where she lived. Sh 2 CONC e enjoyed being a part of the Senior Citizens Center in Covington and, when she was able, don 2 CONC ated her time or handwork. She loved to read and learn new things and was interested in readi 2 CONC ng about historical events of famous people. When she was 89 she finally agreed that maybe sh 2 CONC e should not drive any more since she had lost the sight in one eye due to glaucoma and was v 2 CONC ery hard of hearing. However it was difficult for her to do since she was always self suffici 2 CONC ent and independent. She and Hub set up a trust for the Covington-Douglas School System wit 2 CONC h a scholarship to go the most deserving senior each year. 2 CONT Hub died in 1989 and Ethel lived in her home in Covington until 1994. She kept her weeds pul 2 CONC led and her house in order. She enjoyed going to the Senior Citizen Center some days for lunc 2 CONC h and fellowship. She was always ready to get in the car and go somewhere. When she was 90 w 2 CONC e went to the Marland Mansion in Ponca City and after the tour she wasn't as tired as I was 2 CONC . I am so grateful that she spent the last months of her life in my home in Enid, I learned f 2 CONC rom her spunk and patience. In September I took her in a wheel chair and we spent the day o 2 CONC n the square in downtown Enid taking in the Cherokee Strip festivities. Wlhen we got home I c 2 CONC ommented that I was more tired than she was and she said "Well, you should be, you were pushi 2 CONC ng me." 2 CONT Ethel died in October of that year. When I was small I wa 2 CONC s excited to see them come to visit because they had children I could play with. However, I k 2 CONC new they loved me and always seemed glad to see me. My sister, Blanche, was one of them. 2 CONT One time they invited me to come to Hobart,Oklahoma, where they lived for awhile, for a visi 2 CONC t. I was probably about 13 or 14 years old. I went by train and that was a very exciting tri 2 CONC p for me to travel alone "so far" from home. Of course I had a really good time. Then whe 2 CONC n I went to Enid to work the summer before my last year in high school, I stayed with them fo 2 CONC r awhile. That was the first time I had ever seen a "rear-view" mirror in a bathroom, and i 2 CONC t was the first time I ever had a really good look at the back of my hair! I have never bee 2 CONC n without one since I left home. I always thougt the dresses she made for her three girls wer 2 CONC e so pretty, and some times she made them for other little girls in the family. I know I go 2 CONC t some of them. 2 CONT Then there was the year when we lived in Covington and Blanche kept my three year old younge 2 CONC st son, Mark, while I rode back and forth with Roy to work in Enid. Mark liked to stay th 2 CONC ere so much that he didn't seem to care if he came home or stayed there. He really looked for 2 CONC ward to his morning bowl of oatmeal, he said mine wasn't as good as "Aunt Banch's." 2 CONT That is the way it was with Blanche. She was always so thoughtful and caring of other people 2 CONC . I hated to tell her I had a head ache because the tears would roll down her cheeks in sympa 2 CONC thy. She loved pretty things and spent hours in her flower beds. Every time I left she sen 2 CONC t a start of a plant with me. She was a good cook and made the best pie crust I ever tasted a 2 CONC nd she gave me many pieces of her handwork. For years, when it was popular to put doilies o 2 CONC n the arms and backs of overstuffed furniture, I always had pretty sets made by Blanche. Sh 2 CONC e even taught me how to block them with sugar water so they would keep their shape. One yea 2 CONC r for Christmas she made me a Raggedy Ann doll. I was thrilled and just about wore it playin 2 CONC g with it but I still have and cherish that rag doll. 2 CONT She had pretty natural curly blonde hair and in her later years, it was a pretty curly white 2 CONC . I always wondered why I couldn't have inherited that curly hair since I hated to get thos 2 CONC e machine permanents that burned my head and ears. She was a quiet person but she was alway 2 CONC s ready to help others. Many times she would have a quilt "in the frame". I would like to kno 2 CONC w how many quilts she made. She enjoyed belonging to clubs and quilting with friends. Her gra 2 CONC nddaughter, Diane Fluman Greinert, said she learned so much from her grandmother about pati 2 CONC ence. I know I learned a lot from her about caring about other people. We had a common love o 2 CONC f family history and her little book of our families birth, marriage and death information wa 2 CONC s the start of my records. I loved her dearly as did everyone around her. 2 CONT I was never too close to Roy when I was young. He was much stricter than my Dad and I wa 2 CONC s a little afraid of him but I expect he thought I was pretty spoiled. He and Blanche were al 2 CONC ways very active in their church and I remember hearing his voice booming above others singin 2 CONC g those beautiful old hymns. However, in later years, especially when I was riding back and f 2 CONC orth to work in Enid with him, I liked to hear him tell stories about his life and railroad w 2 CONC ork and I regret that I don't remember much about what he told me. After Blanche died, ever 2 CONC y time I went to Covington to visit my other sisters, I would stop to say hello to Roy and h 2 CONC e always had a bag of his home made chocolate chip cookies to send home with me. 2 CONT 2 CONT OBITUARY (Enid News & Eagle) 2 CONT Services for Mrs. Roy (Blanche) Kegin, 78, Covington, who died Thursday in an Enid hospita 2 CONC l after a short illness, will be at 2 p.m Saturday in the First Christian Church at Covington 2 CONC . He gave him also a young horse, "fit for 2 CONT riding," when he commenced "Master;". Graduating from college in 1725, 2 CONT he pursued for a while the vocation of land-surveyer. Nov 26, 1727, he 2 CONT was admitted to full membership in Cambridge church, being styled in the 2 CONT records as "Sir Cutter" a title applied to all graduated during the 2 CONT interval between making their first and their second or Master's degree. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1727 the trustees and proprietors of North Yarmouth, Maine,.....the 2 CONT erection of a convenient house for the "public worship of God" and the 2 CONT provision of "a good orthodox minister" claimed early consideration. 2 CONT Ammi Ruhamah Cutter, as candidate, preached his first sermon, Sunday, 2 CONT Nov 10, 1729; and became the first settled minister of the town. 2 CONT ....at a meeting of the Inhabitants of North Yarmouth April 24, 1730 2 CONT voted to give the Rev. While at North Yarmouth he took a prominent part in all 2 CONT public transactions. His graceful chirography was highly appreciated and 2 CONT frequently employed in writing deeds and other instruments (his sig. is 2 CONT included in this chapter). In 1741(?) he was the town's agent in the 2 CONT General Court of Massachusetts. In 1742 he was appointed superintendent 2 CONT of a trading house for the Indians. His command was attachedd to Col. Jeremiah 2 CONT Moulton's regiment from York County. March 24, 1745, the American fleet 2 CONT left Boston and on April 4th reached Canso. April 2 CONT 29th, the whole fleet sailed from Canso for Cape Breton. June 16, 1745, 2 CONT Louisburg capitulated. The winter following the surrender Capt. 2 CONT Cutter was detailed to remain as surgeon and chief commandant of the 2 CONT fortress.
